Booking Procedure and Requirements
1. What is the difference between a motel/hotel and Hostel Tahoe?
Hostel Tahoe provides a full kitchen, dining room, and living room for guest use. We all know that expenses can add up when coming to the mountains; it can really help the budget for folks to use the kitchen to cook meals or prepare lunches. Another difference is that guests interact more in a hostel as they share the day’s adventure during meal times or sitting by the fire in the living room. Lastly, if you’re staying in the dorm you’ll be sharing a bathroom with your roommates. If you’re in one of the private/family rooms, you’ll have your own private bathroom.
2. Are you a youth hostel?
Hostel Tahoe is open to all ages of travelers and mountain visitors, young and old alike are welcome. Our typical guests are outdoor enthusiasts.
3. Do I need a membership to stay at Hostel Tahoe?
No! Hostel Tahoe is a small, independently and locally owned hostel.
4. What age is considered a “child” for reservation purposes?
For reservation purposes, a ‘child’ is any person who is 12 years of age or younger. Anyone who is older than 13 years of age will be considered an adult and will be charged accordingly.
5. How do I make a reservation at Hostel Tahoe?
The best and simplest way to make a reservation is through our Reservation page. Once a reservation is made and a deposit is received by Hostel Tahoe, you will receive an email confirmation. Reservations for Hostel Tahoe can only be made through our website or by contacting us directly. We are not subscribed to any third party booking services.
6. How do I make changes to my reservation?
Please contact us via email or phone. Please be sure to include your reservation confirmation number with your email subject title.
7. What is your cancellation policy?
Your reservation deposit is non-refundable. If you need to change or cancel your reservation, a minimum of 48 hours notice is required to obtain a deposit credit. Deposit credit must be used within one year of the date of cancellation. There are NO refunds for late arrivals, early departures, shortening of stays or no shows. (See payment policy).

8. How long can a guest stay at Hostel Tahoe?
To best meet our mission for supporting travel and promoting cultural exchange, as well as to better serve and provide the best accommodation possible to all our guests, Hostel Tahoe has adopted the following maximum stay policy: No guest may stay at our shared dorm rooms for more than 14 consecutive nights. Once a guest reaches their 14th night, s/he is not eligible to stay at our dorms until after at least 7 days of absence. We do offer more flexibility depending upon availability for our private (queen, double and family) rooms, extended stay is permitted in our private rooms for up to 29 nights. Guest(s) who plan to stay at Hostel Tahoe for more than 14 nights may be required to sign an extended stay agreement form at time of check-in. Extended stay of 30 or more nights in our private rooms may be permitted based on approval by Hostel Tahoe management. For reservation request of 30 or more nights of stay, please email your request to us directly.
Rates and Payment
1. What do your room rates include?
Our rates are ALL INCLUSIVE!!! All rates shown on our website INCLUDE all applicable Tax, House-made light breakfast (Sat-Sun 8-10am), Parking, WiFi, Towels and Bedding, Fully-equipped Kitchen and Lounge use, friendly hostel staff and unlimited travel tips and activities advice! Please note that Hostel Tahoe reserves the right to change pricing without notice and also reserves the right to correct any errors in published rates prior to occupancy.
2. What methods of payment does Hostel Tahoe accept?
Payments may be made by cash, credit card, debit card, money order, local bank checks, or travelers checks.
3. Can I pay for my reservation day to day, as my plans may change?
Sorry, all reservations must be paid in full upon arrival. If your plans do change, simply give our manager a 48 hour notice and a credit will be issued for the remainder of the reservation.
4. How do I know if a reservation is confirmed?
50% of the total reservation cost is due at time of booking as a non-refundable deposit to guarantee your reservation. Your deposit will go toward your total balance. Final payment is due at check-in. Reservation is NOT confirmed until deposit is received and a confirmation email is issued to you by Hostel Tahoe. All secured reservations are subject to our cancellation policy.
All rates and dates are final upon confirmation. Rates for unconfirmed reservations are subject to change without prior notice. Specials, discounts, and other offers are subject to change without prior notice. Offers cannot be combined.

5. Does Hostel Tahoe give refunds?

1. What types of rooms are available?
Hostel Tahoe offers a combination of private and dorm rooms. Please visit the Rooms page for details about each specific room type.
2. Do I have to cover my bed with bedding (bed sheets and pillowcases) provided by the Hostel?
For health and hygiene reasons, we provide free fresh clean bedding (a fitted sheet, flat sheets, and pillow cases) with your stay and ask that you cover your bed with sheets provided. This allow us to maintain a high quality, clean environment for all guests. Failure to use bedding provided will result in a $30 US bed cleaning charge at check-out.
3. Do I need to bring or can I use my own sleeping bag or bedding?
For health and hygiene reasons, we ask our guests to refrain from bringing your own bedding/sleep bags. This allow us to maintain a high quality, clean environment for all guests. Because sleeping bags have lots of tufts and seams, it’s easy for bugs like ticks or bed-bug to get inside the sleeping bag while you are camping and later come out when you unroll the bag in the hostel. We provide comfortable mattresses, pillows, fresh clean towels and bedding (a fitted sheet, flat sheets, and pillow cases), as well as basic toiletries supply to all our guests upon arrival. 4. Is there a minimum age requirement for stay at the hostel?
All individual under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to stay at Hostel Tahoe. If you are traveling with children under 10 years of age, you are required to book a private room.
5. Can I get a top or bottom bunk ahead of time?
We don’t assign beds here at Hostel Tahoe. All beds are on a first come first serve basis. If you have a restriction that requires you to have a bottom bunk, please tell our Hostel Manager at check in and they will try to help you where we can.
Hostel Hours and Policies
1. What are the reception hours?
We are staffed only between 8-11 a.m. and 4-7 p.m., seven days a week.
2. What are your check-in and check-out hours?
Our check-in time is between 4 and 7 pm. Early check-in is only available to our guests if our previous guests have checked out and the rooms are cleaned. After hours check-in can be requested by appointment only, please email or call ahead 530.546.3266.
Our check-out time is at 10 am. We do provide free day luggage storage. Appointment for pick up MUST be made at time of check-out.
3. Do you have a curfew or lock out time?
No, there is no curfew or lockout at Hostel Tahoe. Guests will have 24 hours access to their rooms and communal areas.
4. Does Hostel Tahoe allow……..
Un-chaperoned youth under the age of 18?
Sorry, Hostel Tahoe cannot accommodate youth under the age of 18 that is not accompanied by a parent or guardian.
All individuals using Hostel Tahoe facilities (e.g. communal kitchen, lounge, dining area, courtyard, and BBQ area) must be paying guests. This is for the security of all our guests who expect that we can identify everyone in our building and provide a secure environment. Non-paying visitors are only allowed to use Hostel Tahoe facilities if exclusive use booking is in effect and Hostel Management has been informed.
Additional guest exceeding the maximum guests allowed in each room?
No, except if the additional guest is a child of age 12 or under. Our private queen and double rooms can sleep up to two adults, or two adults and one child (12 or under). Our private family rooms can sleep up to four adults or four adults and one child (12 or under).
Hostel Tahoe is a small travelers’ lodge and is intended for transient travelers and tourists only. Therefore, we cannot accommodate or provide housing to local residents (Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista) at our hostel. If circumstances arise, our managers may ask for proof of non-residency (e.g. photo ID, train or plane tickets).
Consumption of alcohol on premises?
We try to maintain a balance between allowing our guests to fully enjoy their stay and maintaining a comfortable atmosphere for all our guests. For that reason, alcohol may only be consumed in a reasonable fashion in the common area. We reserve the rights to take appropriate actions against drunk or unruly guests.
NOTE: The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 and will be respected in Hostel Tahoe.
Smoking on premises?
We are a non-smoking hostel. Smoking is prohibited on premises, indoors or outside. Please walk off-site to use tobacco products. Violation of this will result in an additional $500.00 cleaning fee.
Hostel Tahoe has adopted a NO PETS policy on our property. As much as we love them, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate pets in our rooms, common areas, parking lot, in vehicles, or on the Hostel grounds. Hostel Tahoe shares its lovely mountainous location with wildlife such as bears, mountain lions, and coyotes, to keep your pet safe and happy, we kindly ask you to please leave them at home. There is also vehicle and bike traffic that could pose a safety issue for pets. Due to the safety issues, there is no opportunity for compromise or grey area regarding Hostel Tahoe’s No Pet Policy. Please do not expect or request special treatment. We can refer you to the local pet boarding house, while you choose to stay at Hostel Tahoe. Amenities and Directions
1. How do I get to Hostel Tahoe? What if I don’t have a car?
Getting to Hostel Tahoe is easy, even if you don’t have a car. See Directions for driving directions and how to get to Hostel Tahoe by public transportation from the Bay Area, Reno or locally.
2. Do you have lockers in the rooms? What sizes are they?
We have lockers in our dorm rooms. They measure to 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 18 inches deep (30.5 x 30.5 x 45 cm). The lockers are free but you will need to bring your own lock. If you don’t have a a lock you can purchase one at the nearby hardware store or pharmacy.
3. Is there parking at Hostel Tahoe?
Yes, we do provide parking to our guest. We have local public transportation right outside our doorsteps and is walking distance to local amenities, restaurants and attractions, making Hostel Tahoe the perfect starting point for you to leave your car and enjoy Lake Tahoe on foot or by bike.
4. What does the complimentary light breakfast include?
House-made goodness with love! We offer complementary light breakfast to all our guests every Saturday and Sunday (8-10 a.m.), family style. Certainly not just a standard continental breakfast, cause everything is house-made, granola, baked goods, and bread fresh out of our oven. We also have soy milk and juice, as well as coffee and tea to help you wake up in the morning!
Since everything is made by hand, supplies are limited and sharing is caring! If you like a big breakfast to fuel your morning, then extra breakfast food of your own is highly recommended!
5. Do you have internet access?
Yes, if you have a laptop, we have free WiFi access throughout the hostel, free of charge.
